Whose Wedding Is This?

Lucy Hamilton

Many times in American culture our celebratory events quickly cross over from something that will make the participants happy, to a scene that is meant more for the guests. This is especially true when family is involved, let alone a two family ordeal like a wedding. Although weddings always have and always be about coming together to celebrate the bond between the bride and groom, this can quickly take a backseat to pandering and setting wedding and reception plans that please the guests more than the newly weds.

Regardless of what you have in mind for your wedding, there are going to be several people who will try to alter these plans. Nearly anyone you know could try to force their ideas on you, and many likely will. While there is nothing wrong with consulting many different people, you should make sure you arrange your wedding the way you want.

One of the most common issues that get changed is the size of the guest list. Many times the bride and groom will find pressure from their family and friends to invite more people than what they originally intended. This can lead to peripheral, rarely seen family members appearing at the wedding, as well as everyone you and your spouse work with, and many other people or groups you did not originally want to share this special event with.

So what is the best way to ensure that you get to have the wedding your want? You may want to outline what kind of wedding and reception you really want before opening up to advice and criticism. If you have a plan, you will be much less likely to end up disliking aspects of your wedding. You do not need to have every little thing planned out at first, but some things can be worked out fairly easily, like how many guests you want, formal or informal, as well as if you want a quiet reception or not. By planning ahead, you will be more likely to look back fondly on your wedding.
